How To: Echo Desktop Questions & Answers Posted by Brian Kemp // Livescribe News, Product Updates // 47 Comments
The introduction of Echo Desktop (download here) is a big step forward in refreshing the Echo platform. We’ve been able to address many issues that caused customer concern in the past, and built a foundation that will make Echo smartpens even more useful in the future. But any change can feel big, so we wanted to address some potential questions that our long-time customers might have. Let us know in the comments if you have other questions we can help you with. Please see our user guide for more details.
What are the differences between Echo Desktop and Livescribe Desktop? Please see this chart to see the differences and similarities at a glance. Do I have to update to Echo Desktop?

You do not need to upgrade, you can continue using your current copy of Livescribe Desktop with your Echo smartpen. However, you will not be offered any firmware updates after version 2.9.8., and Livescribe Desktop will not be updated in the future. Phone/email/chat support will be phased out in the future, however web support resources will continue to be available for Livescribe Desktop.

It is important to know that once Echo Desktop is installed and you update your smartpen to the latest firmware, you cannot revert back to Livescribe Desktop. You will need to continue using Echo Desktop on that computer with that smartpen. Why are you changing the name from Livescribe Desktop to Echo Desktop?

It’s been several years since the latest release of Livescribe Desktop. Since then, there have been major new OS releases like Windows 8 and Mac OS X Yosemite. Given that this new release is focused on Echo smartpens, and not Sky or Livescribe 3 smartpens, we wanted to avoid any confusion with the name, while using the opportunity to deliver a “reboot” of how our customers share their notes and pencasts.

How do I share my notes in Echo Desktop? One of the key changes in Echo Desktop, compared to Livescribe Desktop, is the removal of Livescribe Connect. Instead of requiring customers to install an additional piece of software, we’ve simplified the sharing functionality. Customers can still share their notes, full pencasts or audio files easily. Pages and notebooks are shared as PDF’s, audio files from pencasts can be saved as .m4a files and pencasts are exported as Livescribe PDFs. From within Echo Desktop, any content can be sent via email or saved anywhere on your computer, including to local Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive or Google Drive folders. Once on your computer, the content can be shared using the wide range of cloud based sharing services available today. We’ve created the Livescribe PDF file with these new services in mind, with the ability to email or upload standard PDF files to a wider range of cloud services, so customers can use the same Content Management or Learning Management Systems to save their notes as they would with Microsoft Office documents, or other PDF files. Livescribe PDF files are universally accessible and much easier to share than the older pencast PDF files. Why change to Livescribe PDF files? The older format pencast PDF files were created using Adobe Flash technology. This allowed the pencast PDF files to act almost like a stand-alone executable file, and people could just click on the file launch a pencast. Unfortunately, Adobe Flash has experienced security issues in the past, and this ‘executable’ model may cause false alarms with antivirus scanners. Also, Flash is not supported on iOS devices, nor many other mobile devices. With Livescribe PDF, we’re transitioning to a standards-based PDF format for exporting pencasts, and customers will have more flexibility to share their notes and play back interactive audio-pencasts on a wider range of Macs, PCs and mobile devices. Customers will be able to export standard PDFs of their notebook pages and stand-alone audio files of their recordings as well. What happens to my current notes and pencasts? Existing content will be automatically available in Echo Desktop, and all your notes and pencasts will appear as soon as you upgrade. In addition, Echo Desktop can open and store Livescribe PDF files created from other computers or devices, such as those created by the Livescribe+ mobile app.

What will happen to all the smartpen apps that I purchased and MyScript for Livescribe? Any smartpen apps that you’ve purchased for your smartpen will continue to be available in your Applications, or Application Manager views. If you need to install or reinstall any of those apps, you will be able to do so from Echo Desktop. Similarly, if you have MyScript for Livescribe installed, it will continue to be accessible from within Echo Desktop. MyScript for Livescribe continues to be fully compatible with Echo Desktop, so new installations will also work. For more information, please see our Echo Knowledge Base articles.
